Photography and literature collide in a book physically twisted around its subject. Nomura’s 69 photographs are interwoven with the uncensored version of Ango Sakaguchi’s 1946 story The War and a Woman, whose original publication was heavily cut under the Allied Occupation. Bodies, darkness and desire meet a text shaped by war and moral dislocation, while Satoshi Machiguchi’s distinctive twist binding makes their encounter structural as well as visual. This Japanese edition was released on 15 August 2017, Japan’s anniversary of surrender.
